Babies, babies and more babies

Etosha is our first game park experience of the trip so far and we were not disappointed. The breeding season is well underway as the variety of baby animals we have seen has basically mirrored the game. Both camps that we stayed at had lit waterholes where we spent a good deal of our evenings game viewing. Some of the highlights were; 24 giraffe coming in to drink, black & white rhino as well as a baby, lionesses with cubs and some huge vocal male lions, large herds of elephants including 3 babies, brown spotted hyena’s and fresh water Terrapins. There has also been lots of herds of gemsbok, kudu, springbok, zebra, Impala and wildebeest on the plains. A debate of ours has been if it is poor taste to munch on kudu biltong while watching the animals – it’s still not settled. The campsites have also been filled with Jackal and a very brave honey badger.

Sitting at the waterholes in the evening you have to wonder who’s watching whom. Some of these animals are so intelligent; being able to communicate telepathically in the case of elephants or springbok being able to delay the birth of their young while waiting for the rains while on the other side of the fence or wall are animals who can’t even sit still or in silence. We watched a herd of giraffe stand for well over an hour near a waterhole while they made sure there was no threat from the lion relaxing under a tree, the same kind of patience is not exhibited in the 2 legged ‘animals’. This was people and animal watching at its best πŸ™‚
We are now heading along the Caprivi Strip and need to make a decision about where to enter Botswana as we would like to do the Okavango and Central Kalahari though a lot is dependent on the rains, so like the springbok we constantly look skyward.
Hope everyone is well. Love to all x

  2. Great photos and update! I am forwarding your pictures to my daughter as she has told her friends at school what you are both doing.

I say – no problem regarding eating what your watching. If I go on a picnic… I will look at the farm animals yet munch on burgers, ham sandwiches etc

    Enjoy!!!
