Malawi round up

Nyika was one of the real highlights of our trip, this had a lot to do with the setting of the campsite, views over the rolling hills and the abundance of game that visited daily. We also had the opportunity to stretch our legs and do some cycling. It’s not every day you get to cycle past herds of zebra, roan antelope, reed buck and water buck. One cycle was a good 60km of undulating hills and some hard rain, had I known this when we set off I would have wished Kevin on his merry way ;-)The lake was lovely, though nicer in the north than the south as it was less crowded and a lot cleaner.
On our return from Likoma Island sadly MrO fell extremely ill with a fluctuating temperature which meant stopping in Mzuzu for 4 days while he had open heart surgery. Here we met most of the alcoholic expat community as we were required to stay in a backpackers. Thankfully Kevin could help with the mechanics, though this meant spending his birthday with grease up to his elbows, judging from the smile it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. For those armchair mechanics out there one of the reasons for the temp issue would have been a cracked head gasket, basically as a result of cooking the engine on difficult roads and basically not maintaining the vehicle – much to our relief this was not the case though we took the precaution of changing the head gasket since we had the block off. We also cleaned the injectors which incidentally has resulted in a lot less black smoke when under strain. 4 months ago I am not sure I could have written let alone understood any of the above πŸ˜€

Finally back on the road again and having spent more time than intended in Malawi we decided it was time to head for the coast, seafood, salt water (for our wounds) and a bit of sun shine! We were planning on a slight detour to my cousins farm in northern Mozambique.

We are currently in the south of Mozambique – promise to try and catch up the blog soon.

  2. Alex and Jade laughed as I read this blog to them…….mainly at the wishing Kevin well on his bike journey if you’d known how long it was and that you pasted zebra. He reckons the rocks look like a Grobasaurus…sorry if spelling isn’t right πŸ˜‰

I really hope your having a party when you get back! So you can talk about your amazing experience. If you would like I will arrange it as I would really be keen.
One favour…. I have lost one Ridgeback, and the other is about a year away. So if you could bring back two puppy ridgebacks and one Boerbell I would be very happy!
All the very best to you both.
